Snow Removal

Remove heavy snow promptly to prevent excessive weight and moisture buildup. Use plastic shovels to avoid scratching deck surfaces.

• Remove snow after 6"+ accumulation
• Use plastic or rubber-edged shovels
• Shovel in direction of boards
• Never use metal scrapers

Ice Prevention

Prevent ice buildup with proper drainage and safe de-icing methods. Avoid salt and harsh chemicals that damage wood.

• Use calcium chloride (not rock salt)
• Apply sand for traction
• Clear drainage paths
• Remove ice dams promptly

Drainage Check

Ensure water drains properly off your deck. Standing water that freezes can cause expansion and board damage.

• Clear debris from gaps
• Check for pooling areas
• Ensure downspouts are directed away
• Fix low spots before winter

Furniture Storage

Remove or properly store deck furniture to prevent damage and reduce snow accumulation spots that can cause moisture issues.

• Store indoors if possible
• Cover with waterproof covers
• Elevate on blocks
• Clean before storing

Winter Inspections

Periodically check for damage during winter. Catch issues early before they become major problems in spring.

• Check for loose boards
